Rothko, basic art series

Rothko 1903-1970: Pictures As Drama is a dive into the master of colour field painting. In wonderful quality, the amazing shades and hues of Rothko's oil paintings are gathered in one volume.

American artist Mark Rothko (1903–1970) is one of the innovators of fine art of the latter part of the 20th century, and perhaps one of the most loved. Born to a Jewish parents in Latvia, at the time part of the Russian empire, Rothko emigrated to United States and finally to New York. Like his contemporary and fellow artist Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko came to his artistic vision late in life but when he did, he created images so powerful and emotional that they still can move the viewer to tears. Rothko's totally abstract paintings are seemingly simple but contain multitudes under the sea of colour. Still resonating, after over half a decade later, Rothko's vivid red, blue, yellow and black paintings mesmerise and captivate the public.

Taschen’s Basic Art series offers accessible, always beautifully illustrated introduction to this artist and the Postwar American art movement he came to represent, combining concise texts with rich visuals. This is a perfect little art history summary for all of us who love colour.
