Vincent van Gogh painted the Irises in 1889. By that time the great artist was already living in the sanatorium at Saint-Rémy-en-Provance. But despite that and despite his coming end, the painting is full of vitality and beauty, the blue irises twisting and turning. Today the painting is one of the most loved ones in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
